Masada and the Dead Sea

An awesome day! First was Masada! This is shot approaching the rock. The steps on the right at the top are the remains of Herod the Greats palace. Three levels! It is 900 feet in the air and a cable car takes you to the top. otherwise you walk up the "snake path" to the top. About a 40 minute climb. Some people were doing it and they were hot and tired when they reached the top. We also drove by Qumran where the dead Sea scrolls were found, You can see the caves from the road but we did stop to get a closer look.

A watchtower on the top

Looking from the top section of Herod's palace looking down at the second level and a bit of the first.

A view to the west showing the remains of the ramp built by the Romans and on the right the remains of the largest Roman encampment. A total of eight and a siege wall built completely around the mountain.

We had lunch at a kibbutz restaurant along the shore and later took a dip in the Dead Sea. Here's Dolly floating around. Note the therapeutic mud on her face. Afterwords back to the hotel, a light dinner at a nearby restaurant (Cup-a-Joe) with some other of our fellow travelers. Lots of Russians are here in Israel. They take day trips from resorts in southern Turkey!
